Molly Crabapple and Her Amazing, Erotic, Victorian Art
Arts — By Jessie B. Rubin on March 19, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Molly Crabapple is like the Brooklyn renaissance woman of the 2000s. She illustrates, she designs theatrical backdrops, she dances, she organizes, she globetrots and, according to her bio she has drawn “her way through Morocco and Kurdistan, and once into a Turkish jail.” Her fanbase is as varied as her talents. From the low brow (her drawing salon started out in Brooklyn and was promoted guerilla style) to the high brow (her client list includes the New York Times and recent speaking engagements include the Museum of Modern Art and SXSWi), Crabapple’s illustrations and events have made a splash in just a few short years.

Amongst Crabapple’s most recognized accomplishments is her founding of the now internationally known Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. The drawing salon, begun in Crabapple’s home turf, Brooklyn, brought in burlesque dancers and circus performers as inspiration for its audience, peppered the three hour event with skits and contests, and soon became a movement across 50 cities throughout multiple countries.

If you can’t make it to a Dr. Sketchy’s event, pick up a copy of Crabapple’s erotic graphic novel, ‘Scarlett Takes Manhattan,’ watch out for her upcoming webcomic, ‘The Puppet Makers,’ or enjoy her collection of wearable art for Dirtee Hollywood. The tees, which feature Crabapple’s signature feisty females, are available online now at RonRobinson.
